Folk singer Yuvaraj Bhusal has been awarded with this year’s Lok Kabi Ali Miya Lok Wangmaya Award amid a ceremony held at Kushma, Parbat, on Sunday. The award ceremony, organised by Ali Miyan Lok Wangmaya Academy to mark the 99th birth anniversary of Ali Miya, felicitated Bhusal with an award boasting cash purse of Rs 20,000 and a certificate. Cultural expert and Professor Dr Kusumakar Neupane and chairperson of the academy, Hanif Miyan, jointly handed over the award to the singer.
Bhusal has been active in the Nepali folk music scene for the past eight years, and has popular titles such as Dilma Lekeshi, Bhajan Samarpan, and Thirka Paniko to his name.
Speaking at the event, co-ordinator of the Academy, Tulsi Prabas, said, “Bhusal understands the importance of language, words and music and has been continuously producing some exceptional music.”
Likewise, Professor Dr Neupane said, “Folk music depicts the true lifestyle, language and culture through its songs and we find this authenticity in Bhusal’s music.” He added, “Even though the folk music industry has been on a downward spiral recently, Bhusal’s music still has the same traditional flavour of folk music.”
The award ceremony also honoured social worker Min Kumari Giri and her husband Saligram Giri for their contribution to the society. Giri and her husband have been working against gender-based violence, social injustice and discrimination.
Speaking about the award ceremony, chairperson Miyan said, “My father wanted to honour those people who contribute to folk music as well as the society, so being able to honour this year’s awardees has been very fulfilling.”
