TU to colleges: Hold FSU polls today or never
Mar 1, 2017-
With no sign of consensus in holding the Free Student Union election in most campuses affiliated to it, the Tribhuvan University has said there would be no elections in the colleges that fail to hold it on Wednesday.
“We have postponed the polls repeatedly. Now we can’t wait anymore,” said TU Registrar Dilli Uprety. The poll first scheduled for February 25 was postponed till Wednesday at the request of student unions.
According to the university, the election will be held in 24 of the 60 constituent colleges where the candidate nomination process has been over.
Student unions are engaged in disrupting the poll environment through vandalism, arson and clashes. Arson was reported at the administration sections of around half a dozen TU campuses in the past week.
A group of students affiliated to the All Nepal National Independent Union (Revolutionary) close to the Netra Bikram Chand led Communist Party of Nepal torched Sanothimi Campus in Bhaktapur on Monday night. They had demanded postponement of the polls saying that the major students unions had resorted to fake admissions to increase their voters.
Supporters of Nepal Student Union affiliated to the Nepali Congress and the All Nepal National Free Student Union clashed in Baneshwor Campus. The biennial election has not been held for eight years due to disagreement between the unions on issues including the election modality.
