On February 24, the court ordered the government to hold the polls at the local, provincial and federal levels within January 21, 2018, as required by the statute, for “full implementation of the constitution”.
Responding to a writ petition, filed by Advocate Chandra Kanta Gyawali and others, a division bench of Justices Hari Krishna Karki and Anil Sinha asked the government to inform the court about the progress.
On February 20, the government announced to hold the local elections on May 14. Gyawali had filed a writ petition at the apex court claiming that the government had not been making the necessary preparations.
The SC has inquired about the progress in endorsing necessary laws and delineation of the constituencies.
