Four abductors were arrested.
In a scene straight from a crime potboiler, police in civvies followed family members of the abductees, who had gone to Bhagwanpau in Swoyambhu to pay a ransom of Rs 600,000 demanded by the kidnappers. Suddenly, the kidnappers opened fire on police, forcing security personnel to fire in retaliation, said SSP Dinesh Amatya, chief of the Metropolitan Police Crime Division.
Durga Tamang, 41, one of the kidnappers, was arrested at the scene while two of his accomplices—Sachin Khawas and Bir Bahadur Tamang—were picked up from Lainchaur. The fourth member, identified as Padam Bahadur Tamang aka Maila, was arrested from Balaju.
Durga Tamang has sustained a bullet injury on his knee and admitted to the National Trauma Centre.
Police have recovered a “sixer gun” and three bullets from injured Tamang.
Police successfully rescued Bishal Tamang, Nangdung Tamang and Man Dorje Tamang. There were six kidnappers at the scene, said SSP Amatya. He said all the arrested are history-sheeters.
“They came to know each other when they were doing time. Once out of the jail, they plotted the kidnapping,” Amatya said of preliminary police investigation. “We have launched a manhunt to arrest the remaining kidnappers.”
