Holi: Festival of colours and jubilation
Phagu Purnima, also known as Holi, was celebrated in the Capital and hill districts on Sunday. Revellers both young and old celebrated the festival smearing colours and throwing water balloons at each other. Along with Nepalis, many foreigners too marked the festival of colours in Thamel and Basantapur in the Capital.
Police said the festival, which at times can be violent, was marked relatively peacefully, this year except minor incidents. A large number of police personnel have been deployed at different places in the Capital to prevent any untoward incident, said Superintendent of Police Pradhumna Karki, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Range .
More than 200 people were arrested from different places of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur for eveteasing and smearing colour powders forcefully, police said.
Over 1,200 vehicles, mostly motorbikes, were booked for traffic rule violations in the Valley, according to the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division.
Out of them, 694 were later released after The festival revolves around the mythology of the demon king Hiranyakashyapu who orders his sister Holika to sit on fire with Pralhad, his son and devout follower of Lord Bishnu, so that Pralhad would stop chanting the name of the Lord.
The demon king gave such order as Holika would not burn in the fire because of a boon she had received from the god. Holika, however, was burned in the fire while Pralhad came out unharmed. It is believed that any premonitions can be avoided if “tika” made from the ashes of the “chir” is put on one’s forehead or kept in their house.
