- Post Report, Kathmandu

Mar 18, 2017-

The government on Friday told the Election Commission (EC) that it may not mobilise temporary police in the districts categorised as sensitive. Home Ministry officials and chiefs of four security agencies—Nepal Army, Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force and the National Investigation Department—briefed the election body about their detailed security plan for the upcoming local elections scheduled for May 14. According to an EC official who was present in the meeting, temporary cops who he said “are not well-trained” would not be deployed in “sensitive zones”.

The Home Ministry plans to deploy 75,000 temporary police for local elections. But, the EC has asked the government to bring the number down.

The government plans to deploy 226,000 security personnel across the country for the local level elections. Election Commissioner Ila Sharma said the EC has told the government that half of the strength of temporary police should be women. (PR)
