Pressure in Congress to approve amendment bill before May vote

- Post Report, Kathmandu

Mar 19, 2017-Nepali Congress lawmakers and Central Working Committee members representing the Tarai/Madhes have piled pressure on the party leadership to approve the constitution amendment bill before holding the local polls.

They also called on the party leadership to take a concrete decision on constitution amendment and local level polls, during the party’s Central Committee meeting scheduled to begin on Thursday. It is important to approve the bill to ensure the local polls, NC lawmaker Ram Krishan Yadav said after the meeting. He demanded that the party make its official position on the constitution amendment process clear in the upcoming meeting.

“We told the party leadership that the local polls cannot take place by putting the amendment bill on hold,” said Yadav, pressing the NC to take a lead in approving it.

Most lawmakers present in the meeting were of the view that the NC, the largest party, should initiate efforts to resolve the problems facing the country.

“The meeting concluded that the NC should make efforts to address the issues of Tarai-Madhes,” said Yadav. A total of 31 Congress leaders were present in the meeting.

Central committee meeting on March 23

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Congress has called a meeting of its Central Working Committee at the party’s central office in Lalitpur on March 23. The NC said in a statement that the meeting would discuss contemporary issues such as constitution amendment and the local level elections. The NC leadership has been criticised for not appointing the party’s office bearers and members in various departments even after a year of the leadership change. The party expressed its grief over the demise of a former convention representative from Syangja, Mohani Prasad Poudel, who was suffering from brain tumor. (PR)
