Mar 21, 2017-
The South Asian Women Development Forum (SAWDF) has urged the Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Saarc CCI) to nominate it as a representative to the Saarc Gender Policy Advocacy Group.
The Saarc Gender Policy Advocacy Group has been formed under the Saarc Technical Committee on Women, and Children.
Speaking at an event held to commemorate the 107th International Women’s Day on Monday, SAWDF President Pramila Acharya Rijal said that there was reason to pause and evaluate the subject of gender and trade in South Asia.
“Women make up 50 percent of the population of the Saarc region but they own less than 10 percent of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) here,” Rijal said, adding that the trade policy in South Asia was not gender neutral.
Acharya stressed the need for regional women’s entrepreneurship organizations to be represented in Saarc high-level committees. The SWDF is affiliated with over 20 national organizations.
“As the Saarc CCI president is a strong advocate of women empowerment, we are confident that he will support our request,” Acharya said, referring to well known business figure Suraj Vaidya who is the current president of the Saarc CCI.
The programme also included a talk session on the theme ‘Be Bold for Change’. Eminent personalities including Taslima Nasrin, social activist and writer; Junhua Wu, president of Shenzhen Justtide Tech Company, China; Rita Singh, chief managing director of MESCO Steels, India and Ani Choying Dolma of Nepal participated in the event.
