Nepal Open Amateur Golf: Majhi opens up one-stroke lead

Majhi carded one-over 73 on Wednesday for a total score of one-over 145 to take one-over lead over fellow Dharan golfer Sukra Bahadur Rai. Rai carded even-par 72 for a total of two-over 146. Wangchen Dhondup turned in a card of one-over 73 for a total of three-over 147. Overnight leader Hridesh Kumar Singh, Tashi Dong, and Tashi Tsering are at four-over 147. Hridesh scored five-over 77, Dong four-over 76 and Tsering one-over 73. Tshendra Dorji of Bhutan carded one-over 73 for a total of five-over 149. Prithivi Malla (76), Tenzing Tsering (75), Md Shah Alam (74) and Md Shomrat Sikder (74) are at seven-over 151.
Majhi sank birdies on third and fifth holes but dropped shots on seventh and eighth hole. On the back nine, he made a sole birdie on the 15th against bogeys on 14th and 16th holes for one-over 36. Rai Sukra made a birdie on the third hole but triple bogey on the par-3 eighth hole put his score to two-over 38 on the front nine. On the back nine, he scored birdies on 11th, 12th, and 17th holes against bogey on 10th hole for two-under 34.
Dhondup shot even-par 36 on the front nine with birdies on third and fifth holes against bogeys on second and ninth holes. On the back nine, he sank birdie on the 10th hole against a double-bogey on the 11th for one-over 37.
Singh scored two-over 38 on the front nine with only birdie on the eight hole against bogeys on fourth, fifth and ninth holes. On the back nine, he scored three-over 39 by making birdies on 12th and 17th holes against bogeys on 14th, 15th and double-bogey on 13th holes.
Tashi Tsering shot even-par 36 on the front nine with a birdie on the first and bogey on the seventh holes. On the back nine, he sank a birdie on the 11th hole against bogeys on 15th, 17th and a double-bogey on the 12th holes for three-over 39. Tashi Dong scored four-over 40 on the first half, he made an eagle on the third hole but bogeys on first, fifth, seventh, eighth holes and a double-bogey on the second. On the back nine, he made a birdie on the 15th hole but dropped a shot on the 16th for even-par 36. In all, 30 players survived the cut out of 48 players for the final round scheduled Thursday.
Meanwhile, Nepal ‘B’ won the team event with the total of 291. Shiva Kumar Majhi scored 72 and 73 and his teammate Sukra Bahadur Rai added 74, 72. Bangladesh finished in second place with the total of 302 points. Mohammad Shah Alam and Mohammad Shomrat Sikdar scored identical 77 & 74 over the two rounds. Nepal ‘A’ golfers Tanka Bahadur Karki and Tenzing Tsering ended up in third with the score of 305 points.
