UML finalises candidate selection criteria

Party’s Standing Committee meeting held at Chairman KP Sharma Oli’s residence in Balkot of Bhaktapur on Thursday devised seven criteria—seniority, active in party, commitment to party, clean financial and disciplinary history, inclusive, ability to lead the developments works at local level and popularity—for the selection of candidates.
The UML has also finalised the selection process wherein the party’s concerned committees would recommend the names of candidates for members and chairpersons of the wards of rural municipalities and municipalities to be decided by the concerned district committees as suggested by village and municipal committees.
The decisions of chairs and vice-chairs of the rural municipalities and municipalities would be finalised by the concerned provincial committees after consulting with district committees and the concerned committees would recommend names.
However, the candidates for the mayor and deputy mayors of the metropolitan cities would be finalised by the party’s central committee in consultation with the concerned provincial committees.
According to UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, the party would take strict action against anyone who files candidacy against the party’s official candidates, including those supporting and proposing the rival candidates. A meeting of the party’s secretariat would finalise the documents and send them to all the lower committees soon.
