The Dalit Musahar families living in Bardibas-1 of Mahottari district are eagerly looking forward to the Nepali New Year Day, which is 12 days away. And this is not just about leaving behind another year of hardship; it will be a life changing experience for many of them.
“It seems our days of hardship are over. We won’t have to worry about the scorching sun or heavy rainfall anymore,” said Jito Sada Musahar, sharing her happiness before moving into a new concrete house on the first day of 2074BS. The poor families, most of whom lived in thatched huts, have painful experiences of being homeless in disasters like fire.
The Dhurmus-Suntali Foundation of Sitaram Kattel and Kunjana Ghimire has built 50 houses by raising funds at home and abroad. The actor duo is handing over the houses to the community on April 14. The construction work had begun on January 9.
“None of us had ever imagined we would have a concrete house,” said 18-year-old Manje Sada, the first to complete school in the community. Final works of paving the ways and building a 32-feet tall view tower are expected to be over soon, said Kattel.
