New explosives found in Russia linked to metro bombing

- Agencies, ST PETERBURG

Apr 7, 2017-

Explosives found in a residential building in St Petersburg are similar to the unexploded bomb in the city’s metro, found on the day of the bombing that killed 14 people on Monday, Russian security sources said on Thursday. “Explosives were in a similar amount that was used at Vosstaniya (metro station),” said a security source. A witness near the searched building said he heard officials discussing that the explosive device “was exactly like” the unexploded bomb.  St Petersburg is still reeling after a bomb ripped through the city’s metro. The attack, which authorities say was carried out by a Kyrgyz-born Russian citizen, has put renewed focus on the large number of emigres from mostly Muslim central Asian states, who have moved to Russia to work. Russia’s state investigative committee, a body with sweeping powers that is looking into the bomber’s background, said in a statement it was looking into the backgrounds of people it suspected of being accomplices.
