Rawat, Rana set for title showdown

Ira Rawat and Mahika Rana advanced into the women’s singles final of the fifth Citizens Bank Open tennis tournament on Wednesday at the Dashrath Stadium tennis court on Wednesday.

Rawat stunned defending champion Mayanka Rana in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. She will meet Mayanka’s sister Mahika in the final. Mahika  edged past Prerana Koirala 6-3, 7-6 in another semifinal. 

Holder Samrakshyak Bhusan Bajracharya had a smooth ride in the men’s singles semi-final beating Santosh Khatri 6-4, 6-4. 

Meanwhile, the second semi-final between former champion Jitendra Pariyar and Pranab Khanal was called off due to bad light when the match was tied 1-1 after the first two sets. The third and final set will be played on Thursday.   

In the men’s doubles event, Khatri and Dawa Sherpa’s pair fixed the final clash against the duo of Kumar Adhikari and Pariyar. Khatri and Sherpa’s pair eased past Khadka duo Pradip and Bikash 6-1, 6-1, while Adhikari and Pariyar registered a double bagel win over Shyam Krishna GC and Anjan Thing.  

The veteran’s men’s doubles above-45 year category saw Sanjay Amatya and Dharma Ratna Shahi’s pair fix the final clash against Raju Chhetri and Degendra Shrestha’s after winning their semi-final matches.
