May 2, 2017-
People from various walks of life and representatives of some political parties on Monday marched along the Capital streets to protest against two major ruling parties’ move of filing an impeachment motion against the chief justice.
As many as 249 lawmakers from the Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Centre) on Sunday registered the impeachment motion against Sushila Karki, charging her with infringing upon executive’s jurisdiction and nurturing factionalism within the judiciary.
Sajha Party Coordinator Rabindra Mishra, who also participated in the mass rally, said the NC-Maoist move of filing an impeachment motion against the chief justice smacks of conspiracy to foil the upcoming local level elections.
“Such a direct interference by the executive body in the judiciary will have a long-term effect,” said Mishra.
Ujjwal Thapa, president of Bibeksheel Nepali Party, said the two large ruling parties had brought the impeachment motion without giving much thought to the consequences.
Similarly, senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Govinda KC, who was also present at the protest rally, said the country “is being run by mafia and brokers”.
