Police said 25 houses, five sheds and one shop were completely burnt down. Villagers said a fire engine from Nepalgunj failed to arrive on time due to a poor road conditions.
Superintendent of Police Tek Prasad Rai said the fire had started from the house of local Bakshyalal Chamar. “Chamar’s family did not douse the fire after cooking the meal which later spread across the settlement,” said Rai.
Local and security personnel put out the fire after five hours.
It was the third major fire incident in Banke in a month. On Friday, 60 huts and sheds were reduced to ashes in a massive fire at Chitayepuruwa in Daduwa Village Council-1. On April 23, three siblings, all below 10, died in a fire that destroyed a settlement at Kudawa. Eleven houses were burnt to cinders in the blaze.
