In his meeting with the US delegation on Sunday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had asked if there would be changes in the US policy on Nepal with the change in administration, according to a senior official present in the meeting.
There were fears of a change in the US policy following Republican victory in the presidential polls.
This is the highest level visit from the US in recent months. The delegation also met Speaker Onasari Gharti and will meet President Bidya Devi Bhandari and political leaders on Monday.
During the meeting with PM, the bipartisan Congressional delegation discussed a wide range of bilateral issues including registration of Tibetan refugees living in Nepal.
There have been requests from the Western countries to start fresh registration of the Tibetan refugees living in various camps in Nepal. The delegates also raised the issue of settlement of the Bhutanese refugees remaining in Nepal.
Dahal urged the delegates to understand Nepal’s “geopolitical sensitivities” that are attached with registering the Tibetan refugees living in the country sandwiched between China and India.
Matters related to constitution amendment, Nepal’s plans of using the funds under the US Millennium Challenge Corporation, post-earthquake reconstruction and continuation of the US support to Nepal also figured in the talks.
Appreciating US support to the peace process in Nepal, Dahal thanked the delegation for help in the aftermath of the Gorkha Earthquake, according to a statement from the PM’s private secretariat.
He told the US politicians that Nepal is marching towards political stability and prosperity. On the occasion, the visitors expressed concerns about Nepal’s peace process, human rights situation, and trade and investment agreements.
The delegates also met Foreign Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat. Mahat thanked the American people and government for their continued aid to Nepal’s economic and social development.
US leader Pelosi praised the constitutional provisions in Nepal of women’s participation and inclusion, while pledging continued support to Nepal. Appreciating Nepal’s peace process and drafting of the constitution by the Constituent Assembly, she wished for the success of the scheduled elections.
