Govt to reap benefits from neighbours’ progress: Mahat

Addressing an interaction organised by the Association of Former Career Ambassadors of Nepal on Friday, he said that Nepal had failed to reap benefits from the prosperity of its neighbours as its foreign policy had long been used to serve political interests.
Mahat said the country should benefit from its neighbours’ prosperity through road connectivity, trade promotion and foreign direct investment. Nepal’s participation in China’s Belt and Road Initiative would aid the former’s economic development, he asserted. Nepal signed a memorandum of understanding related to the Belt and Road Initiative after doing thorough homework, he said, adding that the MoU was in the country’s interest.
He urged the former ambassadors to extend cooperation as the government was making reforms in the country’s foreign policy on the basis of national consensus.
The former ambassadors suggested developing a robust foreign policy which does not change whichever government is at the helm.
