A panel led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar and lawmakers from several parties held a meeting on Sunday evening to decide the number of units to be increased in the plains as per an agreement reached with the agitating Madhes-based parties.
The government is set to add around 20 local units in the Tarai districts. Sources at the prime minister’s secretariat claimed that the government was preparing to endorse the increased number of bodies by a Cabinet meeting on Monday afternoon.
Addressing a function in Janakpur on Sunday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said the government would increase the numbers soon.
Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum Nepal Co-chairman Rajendra Shrestha said the move had ensured his party’s participation in the second-phase elections but it would boycott the provincial and federal polls to follow if the constitution was not amended before the two major elections.
CPN-UML lawmaker from Saptari Tara Kanta Chaudhary said he did not attend the meeting called by DPM Gachhadar because his party had directed its lawmakers to stay away from it.
The government had formed a taskforce led by Gachhadar to do homework for increasing the number of local federal units.
