Unveiling the achievements and progress that he claimed to have made in the 10 months of his tenure as the foreign minister, Mahat told a press conference on Friday that while keeping Nepal’s national interests at the core, he opted for “proactive diplomacy”.
He also dismissed allegations that the government had a tilt towards India and that it did little to improve relations with China. “Our relation with China is good. The
signing of the One Belt One Road and other understandings with China are historic.”
The foreign minister said that bilateral relations with other friendly nations had been improved and Nepal sent clear messages to the international community about the constitution and successful conclusion of the peace process.
Some progress was made on establishing the rights of and facilities for Nepali migrant workers in labour destinations.
Nepal’s participation in UN and other multilateral organisations has been increased and government has successfully on persuading the positive aspects of the constitution to the international community are also listed as achievements of the government.
Work was started to revamp the Institute of Foreign Affairs and a high-level committee formed on conducting economic diplomacy and monitoring.
