EC gives RJP-Nepal three days to submit details
The Election Commission has opened a fresh window for the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal to submit the names, signatures and position of party officials authorised to provide official letters of candidate nomination. The Election Commission has opened a fresh window for the Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal to submit the names, signatures and position of party officials authorised to provide official letters of candidate nomination.
The agitating RJP-Nepal, formed after the merger of six Madhes-based parties, has not completed this task.
Of the 80 parties registered with the EC for contesting the local elections, 63 have already submitted the details.
The commission’s move comes in line with an amendment to the Local Level Election Act that was passed by Parliament on Thursday and subsequently approved by President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
A notice will be published on Saturday, setting aside June 10, 11 and 13 for the purpose, said EC Secretary Gopinath Mainali.
According to the previous provision of the Act, a party had to submit the details
15 days ahead of candidate nomination. The amendment authorises the poll body to decide the period as it deems necessary.
The RJP-Nepal, however, is yet to decide whether to take part in the second phase of local level elections scheduled to be held in 461 units in provinces 1, 2, 5 and 7 on June 28.
RJP-Nepal leader Keshav Jha said they might not provide the details even this time as the government has yet to address all of their demands. “We are planning to announce fresh protests on Sunday,” said Jha.
