SCOURGE OF DRUGS

Jul 4, 2017-

This refers to a recent report (‘Drug related crimes growing at an alarming rate: Police’, June 30, Page 2). Drug addiction is the scourge of humanity and drug trafficking a heinous crime. The traffickers who are helping drugs reach each and every corner of the country are committing a big crime. Most people fall prey to narcotics sellers due to their ignorance. The scale of this problem is massive. Today, kids in the age group of 10-12 have started taking drugs. There is no part of the world that is free from the scourge of drug trafficking and drug addiction. Millions of drug addicts all over the world are leading miserable lives, hovering between life and death. The disintegration of the old joint family system, absence of parental love and care in modern families where both parents are working, decline of old religious and moral values etc lead to a rise in the number of drug addicts who take drugs to escape life’s hard realities.

MAJOR DIFFERENCES

While Nepal and Switzerland are both landlocked countries surrounded by giant economies, we should not forget some essential differences between the two (‘Swiss dreams’, July 2, Page 7). Switzerland is properly decentralised. There is no caste system in Switzerland, and no clan or caste is governing the country. People pay taxes and the country is not “drugged” by development aid.

Every canton in Switzerland has its own government formed by the local people. The schools (public) are among the world’s best. A handicraft worker can earn as much as a doctor, both being educated on the job by the government, which means everybody has their chance to succeed.

For this, everybody has to pay taxes and do their bit. The rules are strict and people respect them. Swiss ministers have no special protection; some of them go to work on a bicycle.
