KC sets junior nat’l record

KC, who competed in junior men’s 69kg weight division, lifted 100kg in snatch and 132kg in clean and jerk for total of 232kg. In doing so, he surpassed previous national junior record of Om Prakash Vaishya by 53kg in total and also surpassed his personal best. Vaishya had set the record of 82kg in snatch and 97 in clean and jerk for a total lift of 179kg during the Grand Prix Weightlifting Championships last year in Kathmandu.
KC, a seventh National Games gold medallist, was satisfaction with his performance. “The performance was better than my expectations,” said the 18-year-old from Nepalgunj who has been in the power game for the last four years, thanks to the inspiration from his father and former national weightlifter Raju KC. “My dad himself was a weightlifter and he inspired me to choose this game,” KC said adding that his ambition was to win at least a medal in the next South Asian Games.
The other homegrown lifter Suraj Vaishya who competed in both junior and youth category in the 69kg division lifted a total of 150kg—75kg in snatch and 95kg in clean and jerk. He also improved his personal best of 65kg in snatch and 85kg in clean and jerk. “The participation will help us learn a lot and get motivated since we have shared the same stage with world class lifters,” said the 15-year old 10th grader from Nepalgunj.
Players from 13 to 17 years age group are eligible to compete in the youth category and 15 to 20 year age group in junior category. Pak Gong Ju of North Korea clean swept the junior men’s 69 kg division lifting a total of 312kg—138k in snatch and 174kg in clean and jerk. South Korea’s Bak Ju Hyo won silver with 137kg in snatch and 173kg in clean and jerk for total of 310kg while Soltani Hossein of Iran took bronze in total (299kg) and clean and jerk (167kg). Vietnam’s Nguyen Quang Truong won snatch bronze with a lift of 134kg.
Guowei Shej of China took home youth 69kg gold in men’s section with total lift of 276 kg—126kg in snatch and 150kg in clean and jerk. Chih-Chia Kao of Chinese Taipei took silver in total and clean
and jerk along with a bronze in snatch lifting 260kg (115kg in snatch and 145kg in clean and jerk).
China’s Fenglinag Su got bronze in total and clean and jerk though he finished runner up in snatch. He lifted total of 258kg (118kg in snatch and 140kg in clean and jerk).
