Newly elected local reps asked to furnish property details

The National Vigilance Centre (NVC) has directed the elected local representatives to submit their property details through the Ministry of Federal Affairs and Local Development (MoFALD) within 60 days of their election.
Accordingly, newly elected local representatives have started furnishing details of property in their or family members’ names, said Parshu Ram Pokharel, chief of property detail collection section at the NVC.
The local representatives who have been directed to do so include newly elected local representatives including mayor and deputy mayor of metropolitan and sub metropolitan cities and municipalities and chiefs of rural municipalities. MoFALD Spokesperson Rudra Singh Tamang said property details of elected local representatives were being collected.
Two phases of local elections were held on May 14 and June 28 to elect representatives in 617 local units.
Clause 5 of the Corruption Prevention Act, 2002 requires public post holders to submit property details in their or family members’ names, along with sources or evidence thereof, within 60 days of assuming office or thereafter within 60 days of the completion of each fiscal year.
Failure to do so within the given time means the public post holder must a pay a fine of Rs 5,000, or the concerned body or official may an investigation into the property in the person’s or family member’s name.
