As many as 44 settlements across 16 villages in Bajura district are at high risk of landslide due to downpours in various places in the district, the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee, Bajura, has warned.

Locals from Brahma Tola, Chhatara, Dugukhati, Baandhu, among others, have been living in fear of disaster for years in lack of options for relocation to safer places.

Having witnessed a landslide in his settlement once in the past, Mandhire Rawat of Gumla Gaun of Aatichaur rural municipality said the village dwellers have to endure sleepless nights during monsoon every year.

“We cannot sleep free at night due to fear of being buried in the landslide or being swept way,” Rawat said.

The Chief District Officer in Bajura, Khagendra Bahadur Malla, however assured that adequate preparedness were maintained against the potential threat of flood and landslide in the disaster-prone areas.

According to him, an action plan for preparedness against natural calamities has been devised and further relief and rescue works will be followed accordingly. The committee has urged the locals to remain highly alert.

Landslides have claimed more than 31 lives in the district in over a decade.
