The agreement was reached during a meeting between representatives of Nuwakot Kakani Rural Municipality’s Wards 1, 2 and 3, Dhading Dhunibeshi Municipality’s Wards 1 and 3 and Kathmandu Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya.
“We decided to lift the obstruction after the KMC mayor assured us that he would visit the area and find a solution to the problem in five days,” said Chandan Bahadur Balami, chairperson at Kakane Rural Municipality-1.
Over a 100 pick-up trucks carrying garbage from the metropolis were stuck on their way to the landfill site since Wednesday after Okharpauwa locals prevented them from dumping waste.
Locals were complaining that the authorities had failed to find a lasting solution to garbage dumping and that they were not doing enough to prevent the stench emanating from the dumping site. They had also expressed concern about the possible spread of diseases due to the garbage dumped at the Okharpauwa landfill site.
The locals are also demanding that the authorities shift the dumping site from Sisdole to Banchare Danda.
Around 800 metric ton of solid waste from three districts of Kathmandu Valley is dumped at the site on a daily basis.
Kathmandu alone produces around 450 metric ton of solid waste every day.
