DoE: 1,406 schools damaged in monsoon-related disasters
The devastation caused by floods and landslides has added to the burden the country is bearing following the earthquake of 2015
Aug 25, 2017-At least 1,406 schools were either damaged or destroyed in monsoon-related disasters this year, according to the Department of Education (DoE).
Nearly half a million students from 31 districts have been hit by floods and
landslides since the onset of this year’s monsoon, Chiranjivi Gautam, deputy director at DoE, said.
The loss could go up as the assessment is still underway. The final report is expected to be out after two weeks.
The devastation caused by floods and landslides has added to the burden the country already is bearing following the destructive earthquake of 2015, in which 33,000 classrooms of 7,923 schools across the country were either damaged or destroyed.
The country has still not recovered from the destruction wrought by the earthquake.
Hardly 2,000 schools-- less than 25% of the quake-hit schools-- have been rebuilt so far.
An estimated Rs 167 billion is required to rebuild the earthquake-affected schools. The government has hardly half of the required budget.
