Tok Raj Pandey, director of the Department of Transport Management, said installation of new licence plates will start from Sunday, beginning with two-wheelers owned by the department and other government agencies.
The installation of digital licence plates is expected to control the incidents of vehicle theft, improve response time in times of road accidents and help government collect vehicle tax.
SP Lokendra Malla, also the spokesperson for Kathmandu Metropolitan Traffic Police Department, said the new number plate system would improve the overall traffic management and regulation as every plate will have digital information of the vehicle, its owner and tax status along with a GPS device to track its location in case of theft or accident.
For four-wheelers that fall under the heavy vehicle category, the cost of new plates has been set at Rs 3,600. Owners of medium and small-sized four-wheeled vehicles would be set back Rs 3,200. Three-wheelers would be charged Rs 2,900 and two-wheelers Rs 2,500.
