Presented by the Embassy of Mexico and Honorary Consul for Mexico in Nepal alongside SAG, the exhibition will feature 60 Amate paintings, that have been brought in from Mexico itself.
Amate is a type of paper created from the barks of the wild fig tree, nettle tree and mulberry tree, each with a different tone of colour, ranging from coffee browns to silvery whites.
Speaking to the Post about the art exhibition, Sangeeta Thapa, director of Siddhartha Art Gallery, says, “When I was offered to curate these Mexican Amate paintings, I just had to do it. The gallery could use something new and exciting. Curating Amate paintings would also mean breaking the monotony.” She adds, “As a curator, I try to bring in variety of artworks by both national and international artists on display—this brings variation and excitement not just for the public but to us as curators too.”
According to Thapa, there is a lot of similarity between Mexican and Nepali culture. She puts light to the fact that Mexican Amate paintings hold similarities with Nepali Mithila paintings. Thapa believes that the resemblance of these two cultures can strike a chord with Nepali people here.
Thapa also shares her views on enriching people with various kind of exhibitions that SAG focuses on. She mentions that after the two-week long Mexican Amate Paintings exhibition, the gallery will have Manga Paintings on display.
The Mexican Amate Paintings is a two-week long exhibition, which will conclude on September 14.
The show will be inaugurated by the consul of Mexico in Nepal, Naresh Duggar.
