Okharpauwa folks turn away waste containers
Sep 6, 2017-
The residents of Okharpauwa in Nuwakot have said they would not allow disposal of garbage from Kathmandu Valley at the dumping site until their demands remain unaddressed.
They decided to halt waste disposal containers from disposing of in protest of the deduction in the compensation amount being given to the affected households.
According to Okharpauwa’s ward chair Kedar Poudel, the Okharpauwa residents have turned away 85 vehicles laden with garbage that reached the site for disposal in the past 24 hours.
Earlier the houses and sheds that lie within the 900-metre radius of the disposal site were getting annual monetary compensation of Rs50,000 per square metre. But the Kathmandu Metropolitan City decided to reduce the distance effective from this fiscal year, Poudel said.
Waste collected from Kathmandu Valley is being disposed at Sisdole of Okharpauwa in Nuwakot for the past 13 years.
The Okharpauwa residents have also demanded the construction of a 15-bed health facility for the people affected by the waste disposal and develop an alternative landfill site at Bancharedanda which is located about 2km from Sisdole.
