A team of four Nepali sculptors is currently working towards constructing one of the world’s tallest statues of Gautam Buddha in the world, at Kumamoto, in Japan. Once completed, the statue, made entirely of stone, will stand at 60 ft tall.

The team is led by artist Ramchandra Pandit, who when he was in Nepal, in his hometown in Udayapur, was a popular local sculptor. “My quest is to breathe life into the statue and to imitate the integrity and strength of a statue in life,” says artist Pandit.

When asked to join the team to create the statue a year ago, Pandit immediately agreed, for, he says, “The offer would on the one hand help spread the tenets of Buddhism and Nepal’s name in the world, and personally too it would be a great learning experience.”

Along with the 60 ft statue of the Buddha, the team will also construct six other statues in its vicinity.

Prior to this, Pandit has created statues of BP Koirala, for the BP Museum in Kathmandu, and a full-body statue of the ‘Iron Man’ Ganesh Man Singh. He has also constructed a statue of the King of Bhutan in Bhutan.  sssssss+The statue at Kumamoto has been under construction for a year and will find its final shape in about two years.
