100 days of Deuba govt: Govt claims holding polls as major success
The government has claimed that holding the second phase of local level polls was the major achievement of its 100 days in office. The government has claimed that holding the second phase of local level polls was the major achievement of its 100 days in office.
In his first Cabinet meeting on June 7, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba had prioritised implementation of the constitution issued in 2015 and holding the second phase of local elections on time.
At the function organised to announce the achievements of the government, the ministers, however, chose to ignore queries on good governance. PM Deuba has formed a 54-member Council of Ministers, the largest ever in the country’s history.
Deputy Prime Ministers Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Gopal Man Shrestha and Minister for Information and Communication Mohan Bahadur Basnet did not entertain questions on the recent appointment of ministers violating the election code of conduct. The Prime Minister’s Office has also failed to make public the property details of ministers, a transparency measure required by the law.
On post-earthquake reconstruction, DPM Mahara said the government had made a “satisfactory” progress this year though the pace of rebuilding was not fast enough.
Presenting the government’s report card, Minister Basnet credited the Congress-Maoist coalition with bringing the agitating Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal on board the polls and thus creating an environment conducive to the elections necessary for successful implementation of the constitution.
However, RJP leaders are not satisfied with the government’s efforts. They have said their fight for amendments to the constitution will continue.
Delimitation of electoral constituencies for the federal and provincial elections, visits of the President, Vice President and prime minister to India and China were also listed as achievements.
