Sep 19, 2017-
The locals of Teku, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-12 on Monday staged a sit-in at the Environment Management Department of the KMC in protest of delay in removing the garbage dumped on the roadsides that has the foul smell that has spread in their locality.
The locals organised the sit-in from 9am, complaining over the environmental pollution and its impact on the daily life of the people due to KMC’s negligence in managing the waste.
The KMC has been collecting the waste from various wards in Kathmandu at the garbage collection centre at Teku before transporting it to the landfill site at Sisdol. Locals said foul smell emanating from the centre has been causing great discomfort to them.
KMC Ward 12 Chairman Bikas Maharjan said the locals staged the demonstration out of concerns that the delay in managing waste might spread diseases.
Rabin Man Shrestha, an engineer at the KMC’s Department of Environment, said the waste collected at Teku could not be transported to the landfill site for some days as the locals living near the landfill site halted the waste dumping.
The sit-in had obstructed the traffic on the road from Kuleshwar and Sanepa.
