Independent candidate Bahadur Sada Musahar has been elected the ward chairman of Bishnupur Rural Municipality-6 in Saptari district.
Seventy-four-year-old Bahadur, who got 229 votes, defeated his closet rival from the Nepal Loktantrik Forum.
“I could not invest money during the election campaign so I had no hope for victory. But people gave me their precious votes. Now I will work for the development of my community,” said Bahadur.
After his swearing-in on Friday, Bahadur said he plans to build toilets in his ward the first thing. “I know what poverty is. People have not built toilets in their houses due to a lack of money and awareness,” said Bahadur, promising to make his ward an Open Defecation Free zone. He also has a plan to upgrade the road of his settlement.
Bahadur was elected as a ward member of then Itahari Bishnupur VDC in the local elections 20 years ago. Several parties had tried to make him their candidate this time but he decided to fight as an independent. “People have faith in me as I have worked for them my whole life,” said Bahadur.
According to Census 2011, there are 234,490 Musahar people in Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusha and Morang districts.
