Reflect needs of kids
- Improve support system for children needing daily medical attention
Sep 27, 2017-
As neonatal care has advanced, there has been a corresponding increase in the number of children who need daily medical care. It is a matter of urgency to expand hitherto insufficient support for such children. According to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, there are about 17,000 children in need of such daily medical care in Japan. This represents an increase of about 80 percent from 10 years ago, primarily due to improvements in medical technology that have enabled even children born with serious illnesses to survive. Among children in need of daily medical care, there are many with both severe physical and intellectual disabilities, but there is a grave shortage of facilities that can accept them. In addition, children in need of daily medical care services who show no signs of slow physical or mental development have recently been identified as an “overlooked” group. Facilities for children other than those suffering from serious disabilities have rarely accepted children in need of daily medical care. Local governments need to reinforce cooperation with relevant organizations in such areas as medical care, welfare and education, and work toward building a comprehensive support system.
