In a bid to incorporate leaders from the rival factions, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, sources said, has violated the party statute. He has also included corruption convict Khum Bahadur Khadka in the board.
Deuba has included nine members from his group, six from the Ram Chandra Poudel faction and Krishna Prasad Sitaula and Khadka in the board.
The party president was forced to induct more members in the board than specified by the party statute after intense pressure from rival camps, according to party leaders.
The NC party statute says Parliamentary Board can have a maximum of 14 members.
Sources said that NC leaders close to the Poudel faction had recommended Shekhar Koirala as one of the board members, but his name was not on the final list.
The board can have a maximum of 14 members including the party president, Party Parliamentary leader and office bearers, but Wednesday’s decision is against the party charter, said a Congress leader.
Leaders close to Deuba have defended the move of including corruption convict Khadka in the board, saying he still is a leader for the party and a power centre.
