Nepal 153rd nation to endorse IRENA Statute
IRENA is an organisation that supports countries to a sustainable energy future by promoting renewable energy
Oct 12, 2017-Nepal is set to join the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an intergovernmental organisation that supports countries in their transition to a sustainable energy future, after becoming the 153rd nation to endorse the IRENA Statute after it was adopted by the Legislature-Parliament.
The international organisation also serves as the principal platform for international co-operation, a centre of excellence, and a repository of policy, technology, resource and financial knowledge on renewable energy.Nepal has already signed the IRENA Statute and will become a full time member of the agency after its endorsement from Parliament in this regard, said Minister for Population and Environment Mithila Chaudhary.
The agency facilitates
cooperation between its members, while also establishing a close collaboration with existing organisations that promote the use of renewable energy.
As a member of the IRENA, Nepal will get international support in promoting renewable energy, for necessary study and research, and for national-level data management, added Minister Chaudhary.
Likewise, it will help import international skills, knowledge and technology in relation to renewable energy, while there will be an exchange of support and suggestions in formulating policy, procedure and standards with regard to renewable energy.
The IRENA was established January 26, 2009 by a conference held in Bonn, Germany with an objective to promote the extensive use and sustainable utilization of alternative energy across the globe.
Other Saarc members have already joined the international agency.
High energy consuming countries like the United States, China and Germany are also members.
