Nearly 1,000 applicants for the job of temporary police (Myadi Prahari) submitted their forms at Mahottari District Police Office (DPO) on Thursday. 

Police Inspector Kedar Basnet said hundreds of people visited the Jaleshwor-based DPO daily to submit applications for the job that opened on Tuesday.  

He reckons that around 6,000 applications will be collected by the time the submission date closes on October 16. 

The government is recruiting 98,168 temporary police personnel for the federal and provincial elections scheduled to take place on November 26 and December 7. 

Sangita Poudel of Patuki was waiting for her turn to submit her application on the DPO premises on Thursday. 

The 20-year-old, who recently completed her high school, said she had tagged along with three neighbours from her village and come to the district headquarters to become a Myadi Prahari.  

Sangita hopes to pass the physical test and get recruited for the job. She said she would use the money earned from the job for her college tuition.

Thirty-five-year-old applicant Punita Devi Mochi is also confident about getting recruited. Punita Devi said she came from a poor Dalit family and that she needed money to support her family.

Temporary police personnel will receive a monthly salary of Rs 17,230. Besides, they will also get Rs 7,100 for uniform, Rs 1,000 each as transportation allowance, a special 7-day allowance of Rs 250 per day, and Rs 250 daily as food allowance. They will be in service for 55 days. 

For many poor and unemployed people in the country, the Myadi recruitment process is an opportunity to earn some money to support themselves and their families.
