In Province 6 local polls, UML won 27 mayoral seats while Maoist candidates came victorious in 25 units

Oct 13, 2017-A Standing Committee meeting of the main opposition CPN-UML has started the process of finalising candidates under the proportional representation (PR) system for the upcoming federal and provincial elections. The party on Thursday started discussion on the recommendations received from the districts and provinces.

According to the schedule released by the Election Commission, political parties are supposed to finalise their PR candidates by Sunday.

“Most of the committees at the provincial level have already trimmed down the number of hopefuls. We will complete the process on time and expedite election preparations,” UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai told the Post.

The Standing Committee also discussed the negotiations within the taskforce mandated to divide electoral constituencies between the UML, the Maoist Centre and Naya Shakti Party, Nepal. According to Bhattarai, the taskforce has decided constituencies in some of the provinces.

Party sources said the two parties were likely to share an equal number of constituencies in provinces 2 and 6. The UML won 27 mayoral seats in Province 6 in the recently held local elections while Maoist Centre candidates had come victorious in 25 local units. In Province 2, the Maoist Centre became the fourth largest force with wins in 21 mayoral positions followed by the UML with 18 seats.

The taskforce is considering the number of votes received by the parties in the second Constituency Assembly polls and the local elections as the bases for dividing the constituencies.
