More than 1300 cargo containers bound for Nepal are stuck at the Kolkata port for long due to various reasons, including the Goods and Services Tax (GST) implemented by India, forcing Nepali traders to pay detention charges.
In a meeting with Eknarayan Aryal, consul general at the Kolkata Port, Indian officials agreed to resolve all the outstanding issues within a week. The Nepali side has also urged Indian authorities to remove the GST imposed on Nepal-bound cargo.
Aryal said he was in regular talks with the Indian authorities for smooth cargo transit. He recalled New Delhi’s decision that the GST would not be imposed on the transit cargoes bound for Nepal and Bhutan. Customs authorities also agreed to refund the GST after receiving details from shipping companies.
