A 16-year-old girl, who was accused along with her boyfriend of murdering her 13-year-old cousin, committed suicide in police custody in Siraha on Sunday.

Priyanka Yadav, 16, of Karjanha Municipality-2 was arrested along with her 14-year-old boyfriend for investigation into the murder of Bhawesh Kumar Yadav. The duo was made public at a press meet organised by Mirchaiya Area Police Office on Sunday morning. 

Priyanka hung herself five hours later. She had been transported to Bishnupur Police Post after the press meet.

SP Sekhar Koirala said the girl used her shawl to hang herself from the bathroom window of Bishnupur Police Post.   

Priyanka was found in an unresponsive state when police broke into the bathroom after she did not come out for a long time. She had gone to the bathroom at around 4:30pm on the pretext of taking a shower.

Earlier in the morning, police had paraded the young couple at the press meet and told the media that they had murdered Bhawesh on October 20 to hide their relationship.

Bhawesh, who had allegedly seen the two young couple having sex on October 18, was murdered because he had threatened to reveal the incident to Priyanka’s family, DSP Gajursiddhi Bajracharya told the press.
