A total of 4,482 candidates are in the fray for the second phase of federal and provincial elections, to be held on December 7, under the first-past-the-post system for 128 federal and 256 provincial seats, the Election Commission (EC) said on Sunday, as it made public the final list and distributed election symbols to the parties.
On Thursday, 4,747 had filed nominations for the two polls.
According to the EC, 265 candidates were removed from the list on Sunday. Nominations of six individuals were scrapped while 259 withdrew their candidacy, the EC said.
According reports from various districts, most of the rebel candidates who had filed nominations against official candidates of their parties withdrew their names on Sunday, the day designated by the EC to do so.
Kshitij Bhandari of the Nepali Congress (NC) and Nrip Bahadur Bohora of the Naya Shakti Party, who had filed nominations against NC’s official candidate Arzu Deuba Rana in Kailali-5 for the federal polls, withdrew their names on Sunday.
Arzu is wife of NC President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
As many as 16 candidates— nine for federal elections and seven for provincial elections—withdrew their names in Kalilai. Five candidates in Deuba’s home district—Dadeldhura—also withdrew their names to support the common candidates of the NC-led “democratic alliance” for provincial elections.
NC withdrew the candidacy of its leader Bajranga Nepali in Mahottari-3 to support Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal’s Mahantha Thakur.
In Dang, rebel candidates—CPN-UML’s Komal Oli and CPN (Maoist Centre)’s Kuber Oli—withdrew their candidacy to support the official candidates of the left alliance.
Komal, who recently quit the Rastriya Prajatantra Party to join the UML, had high hopes that she would get ticket either for federal or provincial elections. But after the party decided not to field her for any of the polls, she had filed nomination as an independent candidate for federal elections in Dang-3 where the left alliance has fielded Hirachandra KC.
Organising a press meet on Sunday, Komal said she withdrew her candidacy to support the party’s candidate KC.
Similarly, Kuber, who had filed nomination for Dang-3 (B) for the provincial polls, said he would support Maoist Centre’s candidate Jagat Prasad Sharma.
In Parbat, Ram Sharma, a rebel candidate from the NC, withdrew his candidacy. NC’s official candidate in the district is Arjun Prasad Joshi.
The EC said in a press release on Sunday that candidates can start their election campaigns from Monday.
