EC to see if poll duty officials can vote
Chief Election Commissioner Ayodhee Prasad Yadav has said the Election Commission is studying the prospects of honouring the voting right of officials deployed to conduct the upcoming federal and provincial elections. “Trade unions have drawn our attention. The Supreme Court has also ordered us to consider the matter. We have little time but we will try our best to honour the court’s order,” CEC Yadav said at a training programme for election officials in Dhulikhel on Tuesday.
The apex court on Monday denied an interim order in a petition arguing that the poll authority would handle the situation without going against the constitutional provision. About 500,000 officials are to be deployed for the polls scheduled for November 26 and December 7.
CEC Yadav asked the CDOs not to assign poll duties to officials directly associated with a political party. He also directed the local administration to remove any publicity materials such as pamphlets and posters that go against the election code of conduct.
