The campaign, led by Mayor Bidya Sundar Shakya and Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi, removed 15 metric tons of solid waste on Friday.
“Earlier, this clean-up drive had covered several areas in the metropolis at once without proper evaluation. Now, we are focusing our efforts on cleaning a particular area,” said Shakya. Soon after his election to the post, Shakya had launched the campaign in June by sprinkling water on city roads to contain the dust, but without much success.
Rabin Man Shrestha, the chief of the Environment Division at the KMC, conceded that the metropolis was struggling due to delay in repair works on the roads dug up for laying pipelines of Melamchi water project.
The metropolis carried out the cleaning activities in Sundhara, Bhotahiti, Bhadrakali and around Tundikhel in the first phase. “We will move on to other parts, once the roads are repaired,” said Shrestha, adding the metropolis the clean-up drive would be run twice a week. (PR)
