Prez stresses implementation of Disaster Management Act

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has emphasised the need of effective implementation of the Disaster Management Act to mitigate natural and man-made disasters.
Inaugurating the international conference on geological disasters in the Capital on Tuesday, the President said while Nepal boasted one of most splendid geographical
features in the world, the country is also equally vulnerable to disasters, a fact that everyone should take account of and take steps to reduce their risk.With effective enforcement of the Act, President Bhandari said the country could significantly lower the numbers of casualty and property destruction in the events of disasters like flood, landslide, earthquake and fire.
“Attention should be paid towards the topographical features and its management for sustainable development,” she said.The President also urged the government and other concerned agencies to speed up the recovery and rehabilitation of structures and survivors affected by the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.
On the occasion, the President also felicitated 12 individuals, including geologist Krishna Prasad Kafle, for their achievements and contributions in their respective fields.
Four hundred fifty geologists from more than 30 countries around the world are participating in the four-day conference organised by Nepal Geological Society.
More than 200 working papers will be presented and discussed during this period, besides assessing the post-earthquake reconstruction works in the country.
