Media society concerned over EC notice

The Nepal Media Society, the umbrella organisation of the private publications and television broadcasters, has expressed serious concern over a recent Election Commission notice, warning of stern action against media houses for publishing and disseminating political advertisements.
In a statement on Thursday, the society has urged the poll body to respect media’s right to advertisements, saying, “The advertisement is not only the lifeblood of the
media but also its sovereign right guaranteed by the constitution.”
“We are gravely concerned by EC’s threat to take action against media for disseminating political advertisements, claiming that it constitutes breach of the election code of conduct,” it reads.
Underlining the media’s role in upholding peace, constitution and these elections, the society has vowed to continue its mission for political stability, nation’s overall development in the coming days.
