A 24-hour helpline service has come into operation to report cases of gender-based violence (GBV).

From now on GBV cases can be reported by dialling 1145. The service was started by the National Women Commission (NWC), on the occasion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign that  concluded on Sunday.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Bikram Bahadur Thapa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reduce all forms of violence against women. National Human Rights Commission’s Spokesperson Mohna Ansari called for unity among all sides to end GBV while Supreme Court’s Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla talked about empowering women by ensuring their rights.

According to NWC, 96 per cent of the GBV cases reported in the last one year had taken place during social functions like marriage, festivals and fairs.
