More than a year into construction, only 10 percent of the Galchhi-Rasuwagadhi road—one of the national pride projects—has been completed. The project agreement is to complete the road in 21 months.
The 82-km road links the border transit to Kerung in China passing through Trishuli, Mailung and Rasuwagadhi. Under the project worth approximately Rs 9.5 billion, the road construction is under way into three sections.
The project has been allocated among Nepal Army, private contractor and the Chinese government.
Tundi Construction Company has received the contract to construct 46 km of the road from Galchhi to Mailung, while the Army has been contracted to build 18 km road from Mailung to Syaphrubesi.
Likewise, the Chinese government has been contracted to construct the remaining 18 km track from Syaphrubesi to Rasuwagadhi.
The construction of the Galchhi-Mailung road has been going at a snail’s pace. Lack of construction workers, delay in getting approval to dig track through forest area, and in distributing compensation for acquiring land for the project are said to be the reasons behind the delay.
“Construction work is under way to upgrade the two-lane road into four lanes from Galchhi bazaar in Dhading to Dhunge bazaar in Nuwakot,” said the project chief Subodh Kumar Devkota.
