Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) on Sunday struck a lucrative Rs 12 million sponsorship deal with Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).Nepal Volleyball Association (NVA) on Sunday struck a lucrative Rs 12 million sponsorship deal with Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
As per the three-year deal, the FNCCI Cup National Volleyball Tournament, will be held on February 8-April 10 across the nations from district to national level in both men’s and women’s categories. The NVA President Manoranjan Raman Sharma and FNCCI Vice-president Umesh Lal Shrestha signed the memorandum of understanding on Sunday.
NVA General Secretary Jitendra Bahadur Chand informed the event will be organised at three levels, culminating into the national tournament. The national level tournament will feature seven provincial teams. Before that the district level tournament will be conducted from February 8 to 22. It will be participated by local teams of municipalities and rural municipalities. The best player among them will be picked up to form the district team.
The district teams then will compete in the provincial-level tournament immediately after. The best players will be selected from the provincial to compete in the national tournament, tentatively set for April 3-11. The top three teams will earn Rs 200,000, Rs 100,000 and Rs 50,000 respectively.
The format of the tournament meant that dominant volleyball powerhouse Nepal Police Club, APF and Tribhuvan Army Club will not participate in the tournament. FNCCI vice-president Shrestha said that the absence of the departmental teams will lend more competitiveness to the tournament. “The standard of the departmental teams is too high and the provincial teams cannot compete with them,” said Shrestha.
Chand hopes the ambitious tournament will unearth hidden talents from the grassroots. “We are trying to find ways to include the players from departmental teams in the tournament,” he added.
