RJP-N weighing options for ‘long-term’ alliance
Mahato says that talks are on with both ‘democratic’ and left forces and the party will soon make a decision with whom to forge a long-term alliance
Jan 22, 2018-The Rastriya Janata Party-Nepal has started discussions with both ‘democratic’ and left forces for a possible ‘long-term’ alliance.
The party has started discussions with different parties with an aim to forge a long term alliance beyond the existing ally Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal, with whom the party had forged an electoral alliance in the recent elections.“We are in discussions with both democratic and left forces. The party will soon make a decision with whom to forge a long-term alliance,” said Rajendra Mahato—a leader of the presidium.
On Saturday, the task forces of the threes parties—Nepali Congress, SSF-N and RJP-N—had held discussions on forging an alliance for the upcoming National Assembly election.
The meeting, however, could not make much headway as the Nepali Congress refused to provide more than two seats to the RJP-N and SSF-N, which the two could easily garner without NC’s support in Province 2.
While the RJP-N leaders are also holding informal talks with leaders of the left forces—CPN-UML and Maoist Centre—for a long-term alliance to ensure their demand of constitution amendment.
“We have been in talks with the left alliance on different issues, including the constitution amendment. And talks are going on positively,” Mahato said.
Speaking in the meeting held at the party office in Babarmahal on Sunday, most of the leaders expressed their opinion that the party should forge an alliance with ‘democratic’ force headed by the Nepali Congress instead.
But the meeting has entrusted the six leaders in the presidium to finalize the candidates and also the alliance besides sending the authentic signature for the NA polls.
The leaders had urged the leadership to chose such candidates for the NA election who could effectively put up the party’s agenda and has contributed to the party.
