China ‘invited’ to US-hosted naval drills

China’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday that China has again been invited to attend a major US-hosted naval drill this year, even as tensions simmer between the two countries over the disputed South China Sea. Ministry spokesman Wu Qian said that it had received an invite to the exercise and had sent a team to discuss initial arrangements with the US. He did not elaborate. The Rim of the Pacific exercise, known as RIMPAC, is billed as the world’s largest international maritime exercise, held every two years, and China has attended previously.
